Necessities and Accessories for Summer 2013

My favorite nail polish brand, Essie, released their summer collection which features these 6 new beauties. Maritime pastels are *in* so don’t be afraid to ditch your sneakers in exchange for a pair of flip-flops this summer to show off your freshly polished toes!

L’Occitane Angelica eye roller gel helps reduce puffy eyes on contact. The essential oil derived from the angelica flower in the south of France boosts circulation and helps eyes look and feel more awake and is suitable for all skin types. It’s the perfect relief when the temperature spikes. For people who want to get that beautiful summer glow while avoiding the sun altogether should try Philosophy’s Here Comes the Sun age-defense self tanner for face and body. This product provides users with a golden glow just hours after applications! The amino acid complex helps firm and tone skin for a smooth, healthy finish. This product is oil-free, streak-free, and is easy to apply.”Skip the sun, and go for the glow.” Even if you don’t plan on being outside for long, you need to protect your skin with sunblock. Clinque’s ELLE approved sunblock protects against aging and the effects of UVA and UVB rays. Aveeno’s Positively Ageless sunblock spray is also formulated to provide superior UVA/UVB protection. This formula contains a patented active photobarrier complex that provide long-lasting broad-spectrum protection.

“It is important when choosing a sunscreen that it is “broad-spectrum” meaning that it also protects from UVA rays.  UVA rays penetrate lower layers of the skin and can cause aging effects such as wrinkles as well as increase the rate of melanoma – a more serious type of skin cancer.  If your sunscreen does not protect against UVA rays, the lower layers of your skin are susceptible to damage.” says Mark Gimbel, MD, a general surgeon at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center.

It sure is sunny out! It’s only a matter of time before you’re reaching for your sunnies, so why not rock a cute pair?! Statement sunglasses are a hot seller this summer and you don’t have to shell out the big bucks and buy an expensive pair like this pair of Prada glasses pictured; there are a ton of alternatives! Stores like Forever21 and Urban Outfitters are great shops where you can find potential frames!

To shade yourself from the sun’s dangerous beams, it’s recommended that you wear a hat – like this cute blood orange-colored fedora – and bring an umbrella to the beach (or wherever your travels may lead you this summer!)

My favorite accessory at the moment would have to be these fun, colorful hair-ties! They’re made out of “ouchless” ribbon elastic, and in my honest opinion, a lot stronger than your typical scrunchie! If you have thick hair like me, you’re going to want to keep your hair out of your face and off your neck during these fuego summer months – these hair-bands are your best bet! You can buy them in a variety of colors online here: These are so popular now that other retailers are even selling them! (Like Sephora!)

I swear by Bumble and Bumble products – swear by ‘em. Bb prep spray is a nutrient-rich detangler that refreshed hair without weighing it down. It creates a natural look and conditions hair while soothing the scalp. If you’re just leaving the beach and late to an event downtown, this prepper will soothe and relax your hair in no-time. This product was designed to help stylists backstage at fashion shows where time is of the essence and shampooing isn’t an option. That’s why I use it when I’m in a pinch and need to look good!

The Bumble and Bumble surf set is a three-piece set that will help you achieve beautiful beach waves. Each bottle smells like the ocean breeze and is infused with softening sea botanicals. The salt water-based Surf Spray helps to create a matte texture while giving your hair body, lift, and hold.

If you have color treated hair, you’re going to want to purchase Redken Color Extend Sun, a line which features shampoos, conditioners, and treatments dedicated to the preservation of color-treated hair. Color Extend Sun protects highlights and restores lost moisture with it’s patented UV filter.

I can’t be persuaded to ditch a good eyeliner, even in the sweltering summertime heat. That’s why I use Buxom waterproof eyeliner to get the job done.  If you’re more daring, you can try a colorful liquid liner, like this light turquoise Stila one pictured. Either one can be paired with colorful mascara (like this electric blue Anastasia Beverly Hills one) for a fun, flirty effect. Regardless of what colors you’re gravitating to this summer, one thing that EVERYONE needs in their beach bags, is a good SPF active lip balm. #2, #4, #6, and #7 feature my favorites: the feel good product, Lavanila, protects, hydrates, and softens lips without additives like synthetic dyes or fragrances, petrochemicals, or sulfates. Fresh Sugar gives you the color you want while still protecting your pout from those awful UV rays. Each lip treatment is SPF 15 and combats dry, flaky lips for hours! If you’re willing to splurge, Dior’s crème de rose lip balm plumps, hydrates, and protects yours lips with SPF 10. This lip balm is petal pink and features a delicate rose scent. For men, Anthony has created a collection of moisturizing lip balms, each with UVA/UVB sunscreen protection. With shea butter, green tea leaf extract, and avocado oil, you’re keeping parabens and phthalates away from your body while protecting your lips with this SPF 25 product.

Time to swap out those romantic, heavy perfumes of fall for the sweet scents of summer! Burberry Summer features top notes of pomegranate, mandarin, and green leaf; with base notes of woods and yummy white musk – a unique, warm scent for those hot and heavy summer nights. Calvin Klein ‘CK’ One Summer (#2) is described as refreshing, crisp, and cool. It’s main notes are citrus, watermelon, and cucumber. CK (#3) is fun and has top notes of delicious citrus. It is clean and fresh, with soft notes of mint and cucumber. Estée Lauder’s limited edition scent, Bronze Goddess, contains notes of amber, zesty citruses like mandarin and lemon, with a milky undertone. Users describe this as a “happy” scent and call it “addictive.” Bond No. 9‘s New York ‘Central Park South’ eau de parfum is a fresh, floral combination of grapefruit flower and blackcurrant buds, heart of jasmine, and lily of the valley.

Now that you know some of my favorite summer beauty buys, I want to know yours! Let me know in the comments section below what you’re coveting this season!

xx Christina Monroe
