Style Cadet of the Week: Natalie Delgado

Name: Natalie Delgado
Age: 22
Hometown: Miami, Florida
Style description: Eclectic patterns and textures, beatnik-inspired, unique embellishments and stand-out pieces, primarily black and darker colors
Style icons: Kristina Bazan, Audrey Hepburn
Current style obsessions: Anything black and white, polka dots, girlie summer dresses
What she’s wearing: Acid wash jean vest, thrifted, $10; Velvet dress, H&M, $30; Boots, Shoeland, $24; Headband, Forever 21, $4; Sunglasses, Urban Outfitters, $16
About this look: When I saw this outfit, I pictured Natalie in a little diner from the 50s. She wears a velvet dress with an acid wash vest, a polka-dotted headband, and hippie-enthused sunglasses… This girl is not afraid to mix and match.
Lesson from this look: Retro is in! Just like our style cadet from a couple weeks ago, Natalie exhibits trends from past decades and puts her own contemporary change on things. Look to the collections of Thomas Wee and Caroline Herrera for era-inspired clothes, as well as Mara Hoffman, Haider Ackermann, and Oscar de la Renta for mix-n-match patterns and consistencies of fabrics. Swing by some of the Orlando outlets; June is the best month for semi-annual sales and crazy discounts everywhere!
Final thoughts: Her hair-do and accessories really make the look. One of the simplest ways to go retro is to do your hair up in a messy bun with a classically styled head wrap, big bow clip, gaudy bejeweled pin, etc.
